The Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development: A total of 1,647 comprehensive pipe gallery projects have been started across the country

The Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development of China disclosed on the 28th that there were 68 ongoing comprehensive utility tunnel projects in China in the first half of this year, with a planned construction scale of 285 kilometers and a total budgeted investment of 29.4 billion yuan (RMB, the same below). A total of 33 kilometers of tunnels have been formed, and an investment of 2.6 billion yuan has been completed.

In addition, the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development disclosed that it has recently initially sorted out two batches of key project lists for comprehensive pipe galleries (including those that have completed the preparatory work for commencement and some ongoing projects), with a capital demand exceeding 200 billion yuan.

Xing Haifeng, a first-level inspector of the Urban Construction Department of the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development, disclosed at a press conference on the same day that from 2015 to 2018, the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development and the Ministry of Finance jointly organized and carried out the pilot work of central government-funded comprehensive pipe galleries. They successively determined two batches of a total of 25 pilot cities. These pilot cities took the lead in piloting and driving the exploration of comprehensive pipe gallery construction across the country.

By the end of June this year, according to statistics from the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development, 279 cities and 104 counties in China had cumulatively started the construction of 1,647 pipe gallery projects with a total length of 5,902 kilometers, forming 3,997 kilometers of gallery bodies.

Xing Haifeng said that the pilot work of the comprehensive pipe gallery has gradually reversed the phenomenon of "emphasizing above-ground and neglecting underground", and enhanced the city's safety guarantee and disaster response capabilities. In recent years, in some cities, the role of comprehensive pipe galleries in dealing with typhoons, urban flooding and other issues has begun to emerge.

Meanwhile, the construction of comprehensive pipe galleries has reduced the problem of "road zippers". For instance, since the comprehensive pipe gallery was completed in Zhengding New District, Hebei Province in 2015, the phenomenon of "road zippers" has not occurred again. In terms of job creation, calculated at one job for every 500,000 yuan of investment, the construction of comprehensive pipe galleries has cumulatively provided 1.2 million jobs since 2015.

The comprehensive pipe gallery also reduces the land demand for the direct burial of overhead lines and pipelines, effectively saving land space. According to estimates, the entry of over 5,000 kilometers of high-voltage overhead lines into the corridors in just 25 pilot cities has increased the available land for development by 2,800 hectares.
